Morrisons has become the first major supermarket in the UK to reinstate rationing for some essential products.

The Guardian reported on Thursday that it set a limit of three per customer for most cleaning products, kitchen roll and Calpol, to ensure these goods are “available for everyone”.

Meanwhile, in the world foods aisle, the supermarket has also limited sales of flour, rice and oil, in a move reminiscent of the first wave of Covid-19 in the UK when shoppers were anxious to stockpile essentials.

According to one supermarket supplier, toilet roll sales rose by 23% over the past week, The Guardian reports, while extra tinned goods, pasta and pain relief were also on the up.

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: Our stock levels of these products are good but we want to ensure that they are available for everyone.”

On Wednesday meanwhile, both Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis and Aldi chief executive Giles Hurley, told customers that there was no need to stockpile, requesting that they only buy what they need.

While Tesco does not have any product restrictions in place in its stores, online shoppers buying face coverings, eggs, flour and anti-bacterial products are limited to three per person. The retailer has said it is not currently experiencing any product shortages.
