Dunnes Stores is set to move into online retailing with up to 70 dedicated home delivery trucks, possibly in circulation by as early as next month.

The Irish Times reports that although the timeline of the new service has not yet been finalised, it is understood that the retailer wants to expand a trial which has been in operation from its Cornelscourt store in Dublin since July.

Orders will be picked at a “a dark store” – a fulfilment depot with easy access to the M50. Although the service will initially centre around Dublin and surrounding counties, Dunnes is understood to have plans to offer the service nationwide.

The service from Dunnes Cornelscourt in south Dublin is available for customers living within a 10km radius, with orders over €50 seeing the €3 delivery fee waived.

As part of the trial, Dunnes had five trucks delivering more than 100 orders each day. On this basis, The Irish Times has calculated that if there are 70 trucks operating as part of the expanded service, Dunnes Stores could soon be fulfilling well over 1,000 orders on a daily basis.

The Covid-19 crisis has no doubt encouraged Dunnes to join the online market to keep up with competitors. Lidl now offers deliveries in partnership with Buymie and Aldi has been trialling home delivery for Dublin customers together with Deliveroo, while a number of c-store retailers are also offering deliveries through Deliveroo.
