Tesco Ireland has created 104 new jobs at its new Tesco Ballincollig store, which was officially opened Friday, 24 October, by Olympic athlete Derval O’Rourke.  The store will employ 125 people in total, with 39 coming from the live register including 11 graduates from the Tesco Positive2Work Programme.  60% of staff are from the local area, with Tesco now employing nearly 15,000 people nationally and over 1,100 in county Cork.

Speaking at the official opening, Derval O’Rourke said: “As a proud Cork woman, I am delighted to officially open this new Tesco Ballincollig store, which is a great boost to the local community. I am also delighted to kick-start the fundraiser ‘tread-milling for Temple St’, Tesco’s new charity of the year.”

Alan Coughlan, Tesco Ballincollig store manager, said: “Being a local man myself I’m delighted to be opening this store in Ballincollig.” He also drew attention to another new initiative by the retailer, the Tesco Community Fund, which will support local Ballincollig charities. The store will also use Tesco’s foodcloud app to redistribute surplus food to local Ballincollig charities, and this technology will be rolled out across all Tesco Ireland stores.

The new store, which is located in Ballincollig town centre, measures 32,000 square feet of net retail space and has over 300 covered car parking spaces.  It offers an extensive range of fresh food including a butcher, fish counter and bakery.  The store is stocked with hundreds of locally produced products including honey from Healy’s Honey, bread from O’Keeffe’s Bakery and Denise’s Delicious Gluten Free Bakery, all from Ballincollig. It also features a pizza counter, salad bar and sandwich bar to help busy shoppers who need food on-the-go.

The Tesco Positive2work programme, which is now in its second year, is a collaboration between the Department of Social Protection, Tesco Ireland, Positive2Work, Skillnets and the Education and Training Boards, all of whom have been involved in delivering the programme.
