A creamery in Co. Cork has been honoured as having the best quality milk nationwide at a ceremony in Dublin

The winners of the NDC & Kerrygold Quality Milk Awards for 2015 were announced this week at a ceremony hosted by hurling legend Henry Shefflin and Tom Hayes TD,  minister for agriculture, food & the marine.

The overall winners at the event were Kieran and Catherine O’Sullivan, Dunmanus, Goleen, Co. Cork, representing Drinagh Co-op, who were recognised with the award for Best Milk Quality. The accepted their award alongside family members and other wellwishers. The O’Sullivans, fifth generation farmers at Dunmanus, close to Mizen Head, recieved a €5,000 prize to go with their trophy.

“I inherited how my father used to do things,” said Kieran, “but I’m still learning every day. Now I see how Cathal [their 18-year-old son] is learning the ropes, and I feel very proud to be able to pass this knowledge and exertise on to my son.”

Zoe Kavanagh, chief executiv e of the National Dairy Council paid tribute to generations of Irish dairy farmers  and the pride they hold for what they do. “Skills and heritage are passed down from father to son,” she said, “or from mother to daughter.

“Through this awards programme, we see a passion for progressing and learning the newest and best way of doing things, combined with a heartfelt wish to take care of and improve on the farm, so that it can be passed on to the next generation again with care and pride.”

Runners up in the national awards were Denis, Siobhan, Barry and Jane O’Mahony from Shanakiel, Kilbrittain, Bandon, Co. Cork, who supply milk to Barryroe Co-op.   The national judging panel also awarded four national category prizes and highly commended seven dairy farms at the awards ceremony.
