YOJO Energy, a new Irish energy drinks brand, has launched with a proposition aimed at consumers looking for an alternative to conventional energy drinks.
Founded by Irish entrepreneurs Molly Ryan, Jake Ryan and Tom Murphy, YOJO was created around the question: “why can’t energy be clean?” The resulting range combines natural ingredients with a selection of lighter, fruit-led flavours.
Three flavours
The YOJO range is available in three flavours: cherry and lime, blood orange and sicilian lemon, and white peach and lychee.
The drinks are lightly sparkling and come in 250ml cans. The brand describes the range as offering a more considered approach to energy, designed for use across a variety of occasions, from work and study to exercise and travel.
Cherry and lime is described as a bold and crisp combination of sweet cherry and refreshing lime, while blood orange and sicilian lemon offers a bright, citrus-forward profile. White peach and lychee combines white peach sweetness with a soft lychee finish.
Natural caffeine and L-theanine
Each 250ml can contains 80mg of natural caffeine sourced from green coffee beans, alongside L-theanine from green tea.
According to YOJO, the combination is intended to provide a more balanced energy experience, with L-theanine helping to balance the stimulating effects of caffeine.
The drinks also contain a blend of vitamins, providing 50% of the NRV of vitamin C, B3 (niacin), B6, B12 and biotin.
Low-calorie formula
YOJO contains 25 calories per can and 4.25g of naturally occurring sugar, sourced from real white grape juice.
The company says the range contains no added sugar or sweeteners, as well as no artificial sweeteners, preservatives or colours. A touch of pink Himalayan rock salt is also included as a source of electrolytes.
A more considered energy proposition
The founders say YOJO was developed to provide energy without what they describe as the “crash, excess sugar, or artificial ingredients” associated with some conventional energy drinks.
“We wanted an energy drink that supported busy, modern lifestyles, one that delivers steady energy without feeling excessive or artificial,” co-founder Molly Ryan, said.
The brand positions the drinks for a broad range of occasions, including workouts, workdays, studying, travel and social occasions.
Inspired by Japanese philosophy
The YOJO brand takes its name and inspiration from yōjō, described by the company as a centuries-old Japanese philosophy centred on nourishing oneself through small, consistent habits.
The concept is reflected in the brand’s positioning around a more intentional approach to energy and everyday consumption. Its tagline is: “be intentional with your energy”.
Branding focuses on balance
The idea of balance also features in YOJO’s packaging and visual identity.
The brand’s “YOJO orb” is designed as a visual representation of two contrasting forms coming together, reflecting the relationship between caffeine and L-theanine.
The can design also incorporates a half-exposed, half-labelled format, which the company says is intended to reinforce the concept of what is revealed and concealed.
With its Irish founders, low-calorie formulation and three fruit-led flavours, YOJO is entering the energy drinks category with a proposition focused on natural ingredients and a more balanced approach to everyday energy.
