Tesco Ireland is calling on customers to join them in helping to make Christmas brighter for families in need as the Stronger Starts Christmas Food Collection returns to its supermarkets nationwide from Friday, 5 December to Sunday, 7 December.

Working with the Family Resource Centre Network, FoodCloud, and other local voluntary organisations, these vital food donations will be distributed to children and their families most in need over the festive season.

And as an extra support, Tesco noted that it will top-up customer donations by another 20%.

Preferred food items

Customers are encouraged to buy just one item of non-perishable food, such as porridge, rice, pasta or canned items, and place it in the collection trolley at the front of participating Tesco stores.

Volunteers from Family Resource Centres and local charitable organisations will be present at trolleys across the weekend to help customers with donations, the retailer added.

Commenting, Rosemary Garth, communications director, Tesco Ireland, said: “The Christmas period can intensify food insecurity for families, particularly children who rely on school supports.

“Through our Stronger Starts Christmas Food Collection and continued investment in Stronger Starts, Tesco remains committed to playing a meaningful role in improving the wellbeing of children and families across the country.”

Last Christmas

Last Christmas alone, almost €350,000 worth of food was donated by Tesco and its customers, with a further €120,000 worth of food donated through this year’s Summer Food Collection.

Since its first Christmas Food Collection in 2013, Tesco Ireland and its customers have donated almost €2.9 million worth of food, providing more than 2.3 million meals to children and families in need across the country.
