New research commissioned by SuperValu has uncovered some unexpected insights into how Irish consumers are planning to celebrate Valentine’s Day 2025.

The findings highlighted a strong preference for romantic dinners at home, the rise of Galentine’s celebrations, and the surprising fact that supermarket dates are now on the rise.

In fact, some of the strangest places people have been asked on dates in Ireland include bogs, funerals, and bus stops.

As always, personalisation is at the heart of how love is celebrated, but it seems a quirky date might just be the way to go.

Key insights

  1. Supermarket dates

In an unexpected twist, Half of the respondents (and 54% of non-partnered respondents) said they’d consider accepting a date if asked in a supermarket.

Even more shocking, 15% would say yes immediately and share their number. It seems aisle five could be the new hotspot for romance – who knew that picking up milk could lead to a date?

  1. Strange date spots

In a surprising revelation, respondents shared that some of the strangest places they’ve been asked on dates include supermarkets, bogs, funerals, and even bus stops.

It seems love can truly blossom anywhere – even in the most unexpected settings.

  1. Romantic date nights

Romantic date nights remain a favourite across all age groups, with up to 59% of respondents saying they plan to keep it traditional.

Whether it’s a candle-lit dinner or a cosy night in, romantic nights at home remain a cherished way to celebrate, proving that sometimes a night spent together at home is all you need.

  1. The classics never go out of style

For the 18-24-year-olds, Valentine’s Day is all about the classics – think chocolates, flowers, and desserts.

These timeless gifts remain the go-to for younger people, and research proves that these age-old symbols of affection are here to stay.

A box of chocolates and a bunch of flowers are still winners when it comes to romance.

  1. Gender doesn’t define how love is celebrated

The research found that personal preferences, not gender, determine how people choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Whether it’s a grand romantic gesture or a quiet evening at home, people are increasingly seeking out ways to personalise their celebrations.

Authenticity, not gender, is what’s driving Valentine’s Day 2025.

  1. Valentine’s Day is about more than romance

While 57% of respondents are in partnered relationships, many also celebrate friendship and self-love.

Whether it’s a Galentine’s celebration or a self-care day, Valentine’s Day is becoming a time to appreciate all forms of love, not just romantic.

The expert weighs in

Valentine’s Day is evolving beyond romance with many people using the day to celebrate friendship and self-love. Whether it’s a Galentine’s gathering or a self-care ritual, this day is becoming a beautiful reminder to honour love in all its forms,” said Annie Lavin, relationship therapist and SuperValu partner/

Annie’s tips for a memorable Valentine’s Day:

For a meaningful celebration: Whether you’re planning a big celebration or a more intimate one, the key is to focus on what makes you and your partner (or friends) feel truly seen and appreciated. It doesn’t need to be extravagant; it just needs to be heartfelt.

For self-care and friendship celebrations: This Valentine’s Day, think beyond just gifts. It’s about creating experiences that help strengthen relationships – whether it’s making new memories with a partner, expressing gratitude to friends, or indulging in self-care. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to treat yourself and others with kindness and love.

“Our research shows that romantic dinners at home are more popular than ever, but there’s also an increasing appreciation for self-care and Galentine’s celebrations,” said Shane Lynch, marketing manager, SuperValu.
