Spar and EuroSpar has announced plans to open 20 new stores in the next 12 months, at the brands’ bi-annual Fresh Focus event in Killarney.

The event saw hundreds of retailers from across the Republic, representing 450 Spar Express and EuroSpar store, gather to hear from BWG management and a high-profile lineup of guest speakers, including the Olympic medal-winning oarsmen Gary and Paul O’Donovan. The theme of the talks was staying motivated for success; a fitting topic since the company used the event to highlight how retailers can respond to the improving economy and grow theur business in the face of ongoing external challenges.

Addressing retailers, Leo Crawford, chief executive of BWG Group said that improving economic conditions are changing how consumers do their shopping. “While challenges remain in the marketplace, including the continued uncertainty over Brexit, new and exciting opportunities for convenience retailers exist in Ireland,” Crawford said. “We believe that convenience is high on the agenda for Irish consumers and we are working with retailers to help them attract new customers and grow revenues by focussing on fresh food, innovation and digital trends to give consumers what they want.

“We also think this will provide new growth opportunities for the BWG Foods and we are anticipating continued store growth in 2017 and beyond,” he added.
