The Convenience Stores & Newsagents Association (CSNA) has issued an important reminder to retailers.

The association reports on an in-store incident whereby a staff member requested ID from a customer buying alcohol. The customer showed the employee a picture of an ID on their phone with an image that resembled the customer.

“In an era where everything is on our phones (bank cards etc) we would like to remind all members to ensure that your staff are aware that a photograph of the ID does not meet your obligations,” said CSNA CEO Vincent Jennings.

The CSNA has urged members to ensure that staff are aware that only the physical forms of the below ID can be used to prove that the customer is over the age of 18.

  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • Garda age card

This particular case is still under investigation, but the retailer does have till prompts and staff have undergone all the relevant training in relation to selling age restricted products.
