Moriarty’s SuperValu Skerries is celebrating 30 years in the Co. Dublin town, marking three decades since the Moriarty family opened its Church Street store in 1996.

Over the past three decades, the family has invested nearly €4 million in the business, continually developing the store to meet customers’ changing needs while maintaining its strong connections with the local community.

The milestone will be celebrated with a family celebration day on Saturday, 10 October, featuring music, family entertainment, food tastings, prizes and giveaways.

Continued investment in the store

Investment has played a central role in the store’s development since it first opened in 1996.

In 2010, a €500,000 redevelopment enhanced the store’s fresh-food offering and created 10 jobs. This was followed by a major €3.25 million expansion in 2016, which increased the supermarket’s size from approximately 14,000 sq. ft. to 18,000 sq. ft.

The expansion also delivered significant improvements to the store and staff facilities, while reducing energy consumption by up to 30%.

More recently, investment has continued with a complete upgrade of the fresh-food departments, improvements to the store entrance and further modernisation of the shopping environment.

These developments have enabled Moriarty’s SuperValu Skerries to evolve over the years while retaining its position as a town-centre supermarket serving the local community.

Recognising colleagues and the community

Luke Moriarty, store owner at Moriarty’s SuperValu Skerries, said the store’s success over the past 30 years was ultimately down to its people.

“You can invest in buildings, facilities and technology, but ultimately it is the people who make a business successful. We have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside so many fantastic people in Skerries over the past 30 years, including colleagues who have spent much of their careers with us and others who retired after many years of service,” Moriarty said.

He added: “We particularly want to recognise the contribution of those colleagues, past and present, as we celebrate this milestone.”

Reflecting on the store’s development, Moriarty commented: “When we opened in 1996, we believed strongly in the future of Skerries, and we are very proud of what the store has become. We have invested more than €4 million in the business over the past three decades, ensuring our customers have a modern, vibrant supermarket and our staff have a great place to work.”

Moriarty also highlighted the importance of the store’s relationship with the town and its residents.

“But being part of Skerries has always meant much more to us than running a supermarket. It has been a privilege to support local clubs, organisations and initiatives over the years, and to get to know generations of local families who have supported us in return,” he said.

Longstanding local partnerships

Community involvement has remained a key part of the Moriarty family’s approach to running the business.

The store has been a longstanding supporter of the Skerries SuperValu TidyTowns committee. The supermarket’s 20th anniversary in 2016 coincided with Skerries being crowned Ireland’s Tidiest Town for the first time, as well as winning the Tidiest Large Town category.

Another longstanding relationship is with Skerries Harps GAA. The store supported the opening of the club’s new clubhouse in 2015 and continues to be involved in juvenile activities and events, including the Bryan Cullen Tournament.

Moriarty’s SuperValu Skerries has also supported Skerries RFC, Skerries Golf Club, local schools, charities and numerous community initiatives over the years.

These partnerships reflect the family’s belief that a local business should play an active role in the community it serves, extending its contribution beyond the provision of everyday shopping essentials.

Anniversary celebrations

To mark the 30-year milestone, the store will host a Family Celebration Day on Saturday, 10 October, with music, family entertainment, food tastings, prizes and giveaways.

Ahead of the event, local households will receive a special anniversary voucher offering €10 off a €40 shop. Customers will also be invited to share photographs, memories and stories from the past three decades, celebrating the people and experiences that have shaped the store’s history since 1996.

The anniversary provides an opportunity for the Moriarty family to recognise the colleagues, customers, clubs and community organisations that have contributed to the store’s journey, while looking ahead to its continued role in Skerries.
