This Climate Action Week, MyWaste, Ireland’s official guide to managing waste, is helping businesses across Ireland build on existing waste management efforts through a new, free, online 20-minute training module that provides participants with a digital certificate on completion.

The module forms part of MyWaste’s free Commercial Waste Toolkit, which was developed to help Irish businesses manage waste correctly, reduce contamination, meet waste segregation requirements and support better recycling outcomes.

Workplaces of all sizes

Developed in collaboration with business representative organisations, and industry representatives, the toolkit is designed to provide practical, easy to implement supports for workplaces of all sizes.

Available through MyWaste.ie, the toolkit includes practical workplace resources such as posters, bin labels, guidance materials and staff training supports to help make waste segregation easier to implement across the workplace.

Designed for businesses of every size and sector, the toolkit is already supporting organisations across Ireland, from hotels and leisure centres to community facilities, retail outlets and corporate workplaces amongst others, helping make waste segregation easier to implement day to day.

Climate Action Week gives businesses a timely opportunity to build on the steps they are already taking, particularly as Environmental Protection Agency research shows that over 70%[1] of the materials in the commercial sector general waste stream are materials that should be placed in the either the recycling or food waste streams.

Better workplace systems can help businesses reduce contamination, improve recycling outcomes and support Ireland’s transition to a circular economy. They can also help businesses meet their responsibilities and may reduce waste disposal costs.

Alan Dillon TD, Minister of State with responsibility for Employment, Small Business and Retail and the Circular Economy, said: “Climate Action Week is an opportunity for every organisation to consider the practical steps it can take now.

“MyWaste’s free toolkit and new online module give businesses clear, accessible support to help staff manage waste correctly.

“I encourage employers across Ireland to use these resources and make better segregation part of everyday workplace practice.”

Building on the practical supports already available through the Commercial Waste Toolkit, the new online training module helps employees build confidence in managing waste correctly at work.

The module can be incorporated into staff induction, onboarding or refresher training, helping organisations embed good waste management practices from day one.

It provides an accessible overview of “what waste goes where”, helping to reinforce consistent waste-sorting habits at work, at home and beyond. Participants receive a digital certificate on completion.

Sinéad Ní Mhainnín from Regional Waste Management Planning Office said: “The research shows the scale of the opportunity, but the solution starts with simple, consistent guidance.

“When bins are clearly labelled and placed where waste arises, it becomes much easier for staff to make the correct choice.

“We have brought the materials and training together in one place so that every business can take part, regardless of its size or sector, and put effective waste segregation systems in place that can be maintained over time.”

As a business already using MyWaste’s Commercial Waste Toolkit, AIB has seen first-hand the value of clear workplace waste guidance. Colin Morehead, Consumer Sustainability Lead at AIB, said: “Giving colleagues straightforward guidance and practical resources has helped us build engagement across the organisation.

“We are seeing greater awareness of what waste goes where, more consistent segregation and better everyday waste management practices across our workplaces.”

Alongside the training, businesses are encouraged to utilise the free assets that will further help staff identify the correct bin quickly.

MyWaste posters can be displayed in kitchens, canteens, print rooms and at waste stations, reinforcing the same guidance across the workplace.

Simple measures such as keeping recyclables clean, dry and loose, separating everyday food waste correctly and ensuring batteries, vapes, electrical items and glass are managed through dedicated collection routes can help businesses improve waste segregation and support better recycling outcomes.

The free Commercial Waste Toolkit, including posters, bin labels, guidance materials and the new online training module with a digital certificate on completion, is available at MyWaste.ie.
