Gardaí seize nine million cigarettes

Customs officials have seized nine million cigarettes in Co. Louth. The discovery was made this morning (Tuesday) following a joint operation between Customs, the Criminal Assets Bureau and the Garda. The retail value of the the haul was €4.3 million with a potential loss to the Exchequer of €3.7 million.
The cigarettes had arrived into the state through Dublin Port from Malaysia, and were found when a truck and a 4×4 vehicle were stopped at a service station on the M1 near Castlebellingham, Co Louth.
Four men, aged between 36 and 44, were arrested following the seizure and are currently being held in Dundalk Garda Station. The seizure was part of an on-going operation targeting the illegal importation of contraband products.
Following the discovery, a number of follow up searches of both businesses and private residences were carried out. A Revenue statement said: "The seizure today brings to approximately 35 million the number of cigarettes seized by Revenue so far this year".
