Total sales of bread, cakes and biscuits in Ireland are estimated to have grown by 13% to €1,035 million, in the five years leading up to 2009, despite a 3% drop in value sales between 2008 and 2009. According to a June 2010 report by market analyst Mintel, year-on-year growth in the market was expected to return in 2010, with sales forecast to rise by 2% to €1,055 million, with a further projection of 9% growth in total sales between 2010 and 2014 to €1,148 million.

Following the leader

Joseph Brennan Bakeries is the market leader in breads and one of the largest food manufacturers in the country, and continues to perform well in today’s challenging environment.

As a brand, Brennans believes it is synonymous with freshness and quality. Its bright yellow vans can be seen travelling the length and breadth of the island. Brennans always delivers fresh bread daily to live up to its slogan: “Today’s Bread Today.”

In addition to the well-loved, iconic white and brown sliced pans, Brennans produces a range of other fresh quality products, including Batch, Sandwich, Toast and the Natural Recipe Crunchy range.

Today’s consumers are increasingly looking for healthy options. To cater for this growing demand, Brennans has three strong product offerings with 100% Wholemeal, Wholegrain and Multigrain, available in both 800g and 400g packs for convenience.

BrennansBrennans leads the market with its well loved wax packaging, which helps maintain freshness and is seen as the most natural wrapping for bread. There is also, however, a demand for bread in bags. Recognising this, Brennan’s recently re-launched a bag range for Sandwich, Toast and Whippersnapper.

In response to the dramatic change in consumer attitude to waste, Brennan’s was the first in Europe to market a wax wrapped half pan range.

Recent developments also include the introduction of the new re-sealable packaging for the Natural Recipe Wholewheat Soda; available nationwide in the coming months. This convenient packaging will also be extended to a number of its traditional products.

Impeccable French taste

The increase of ‘at home’ entertainment, and the demand for quickly available fresh bread and treats are all contributing to the increase in popularity of the Cuisine De France Bake at Home range.

The Cuisine de France Bake at Home bread range launched in 2004. The range is the same bread that the company delivers to stores daily but by packaging it Cuisine de France allows it to last longer and offers the consumer the opportunity to bake it on demand.

The brand’s French bread is oven fresh in eight minutes with a range of Demi Baquettes for sandwiches, Petit Pains for kids’ lunchboxes and Bouchons for soup at dinner parties.

Cuisine de France’s Italian Ciabattinas offer the consumer an authentic rustic taste to add to pasta dinners and its Croissants and Pain Au Chocolats provide a traditional French breakfast treat.

Gourmet breads at affordable prices

The La Brea Bakery signature Sourdough Starter is a unique combination of flour, water and natural yeasts that have matured over time and gives our breads the depth of flavour you will find in no other breads.

Created by La Brea Bakery’s founder Nancy Silverton over 20 years ago in LA – all its artisan breads are still made using this original starter which replicates on a daily basis.  The  simple mixture of flour, water and organic grape  gives each loaf its distinctive crust, chewy texture and intense flavour.  Currently available from your local Cuisine de France category specialist.

A matter of pride

Irish Pride is one of the largest bakery companies in Ireland with bakeries located in counties Wexford and Mayo. Irish Pride marked its 21st birthday in 2010 and the brand has grown significantly over the last five years. One of the key strengths of the company is its distribution network. Irish Pride partners with leading niche bakeries such as McCambridge, Panelto and Stapletons to deliver a complete range of breads to stores nationwide every day.

Irish Pride Bakeries has a strong focus on innovation and continues to invest in research and development to ensure that its product range meets the changing demands of the Irish consumer. During 2010, with the support of the Bord Bia Foresight4Food Programme, Irish Pride conducted a series of consumer focus groups which identified specific gaps in the bread market. This led to the development of two new lines from the company.

Irish Pride Vita Kids is a white bread packed full of all the essential vitamins and minerals kids need to grow big and strong. Research has shown that in Ireland many children do not have enough vitamins and minerals in their diet which is a huge concern for parents. Irish Pride’s new bread addresses these concerns and is widely available in retail outlets across Ireland.

Heart healthy

Irish Pride Bakeries operates a second brand, LifeFibre Co. Following the successful launch of LifeFibre Nine Grain Loaf in 2010, the company has extended the range with a new heart healthy oat bread. Research conducted by the company showed a demand for a bread that would address the heart health concerns of consumers. LifeFibre Co. ‘I love my heart bread’ has been developed to reduce and maintain cholesterol as part of a healthy diet and active lifestyle. It contains oats with bioactive beta glucan. Research has shown that 3g per day of bioactive beta glucan is effective in significantly lowering LDL-cholesterol levels. It is the only bread retailing in Ireland that has sufficient levels of bioactive beta glucan to make this claim.
