Those who lifted the spirits of their local communities are celebrated by Mace initiative featuring Mace ambassador and rugby star Johnny Sexton

Mace recently ran a community initiative inviting customers and the general public to nominate someone who had gone the extra mile in their local community during the Covid-19 lockdown and we were inundated with stories of some amazing good deeds done by people.

As a special acknowledgement of their selflessness, as well as receiving a voucher from Mace for their good deed, the five winners were a treated to a very special video call from Mace ambassador, Ireland and Lions rugby superstar Johnny Sexton. Their gestures of goodwill to their local communities included children selling homemade ice-cream to raise funds for Down Syndrome Ireland, tending to a beloved grandfather’s prized lawn and garden and sending weekly videos to a loved-one cocooning in a nursing home in order to lift spirits.

Mace’s Unsung Heroes initiative was the group’s way of saying ‘Thank You’ to its customers and the surprise calls made by Johnny Sexton were a very welcome boost for the recipients. One very special call was that to frontline worker Stephen McDonald. As well as working on the frontline every day, Stephen made sure to care for the family’s elderly neighbour by bringing him his meals on a daily basis.

These gestures, which also included Mace Killinarden sponsoring 150 hot meals each week to residents in their community who needed some extra support, are just some of the ways Mace shoppers went the extra smile for their communities.

Mace sales director Daniel O’Connell said: “We are very proud of the community spirit shown by all our wonderful Mace shoppers during this crisis. We were thrilled to be in a position to acknowledge some of those gestures and to organise to have a superstar like Johnny (Sexton) make a call to some of our community heroes was an added bonus.”
