Cooked to perfection

They say it’s the small things in life that count; a taste bud-tingling lunch option or salad supper can certainly be a bright spot in an otherwise unremarkable day. Offering both convenience and nutrition, cooked meats are an essential product for many consumers who turn to brands to serve up quality they can trust

A huge 87% of consumers purchase cooked pre-packed meats, while 69% consume the product up to five times per week. That’s according to a study commissioned by Homebird and carried out by Ignite Research among 1,000 Irish consumers, which was published in January 2018.

When asked to rate the importance of factors influencing their food purchasing decisions, 53% of Irish consumers rated ‘price’ as very important. Freshness and quality ranked higher than value for money; 69.5% said ‘freshness’ is very important, and 65% said the same for ‘quality’.

The Ignite study found that 80% of consumers check the label of meat products that they purchase, with over half (57%) checking specifically for the country of origin. 56% check if the product was produced in Ireland, while almost one-fifth check if the product packaging is recyclable.

A report by Euromonitor reached a similar conclusion, stating that while consumers are looking to continue benefiting from the convenience offered, “they are turning to locally-sourced produce to ensure that the quality of the product is better and, hence, the impact on their health remains positive”.

A previous survey conducted by Mintel in 2015 revealed that within the pre-packed cooked meats category, 80% of consumers have purchased cooked meats in the last six months. A significant 30% of consumers eat pre-cooked meats once or twice a week. Meanwhile 53% said concerns around food safety or traceability would prevent them from buying meat.

The company believes home grown produce is better for the environment and better for Ireland’s local communities – which is why it will always be proud to be Homebird.

The new contemporary look leverages the rich heritage of the Horgans brand, representing family values, heritage, provenance and innovation. The symbol represents the spirit of Horgans and the ‘Finders of Fine Foods’ ethos. It is based on the original carriage concept, depicting a gourmand (Michael Horgan) setting off on his travels to find the finest foods to bring home to his customers.

Central to the Horgans brand, as Finders of Fine Foods, is Michael Horgan’s ‘Guarantee of Quality’, which is stamped on every pack.

Horgans packaging has been revamped on all products across the range, including the iconic Horgan’s Blacky Ham, Horgan’s Irish Cheddars and Horgan’s Pates. In response to trends in the Irish market for sharing platters and tapas style eating, the Horgans branded range of continental meats has also been revamped with the introduction of two new salami lines.

Due to popular demand, Horgans will launch three of its award-winning deli/bulk beef products in sliced pre-pack format in the first quarter of 2019. This range includes Horgan’s Sliced Corned Beef, Horgan’s New York Style Pastrami and Horgan’s Irish Silverside Spiced Beef, which took a Gold Award at Blas na hÉireann 2018.
