Ennis, Co. Clare, has been named Ireland’s Cleanest Town in a survey by the Irish Business Against Litter group. The town, population 25,000, saw off competition from Roscommon and Kildare to take the accolade. A €40,000 public sculpture will be commissioned to mark the occasion.

Mayor Paul Murphy congratulated the town’s business community and volunteers’ work keeping the town in top shape. “Ennis is a vibrant tourism town and shopping destination,” he said, “which benefits greatly from the collective efforts of residents, businesses, the local authority and more in keeping the streets free of litter.”

The greatest example of this, he said, was during the recent Fleadh Ceoil, during which more than 400,000 people visited the town while council workers and volunteers worked tirelessly to keep the place looking neat and tidy.
