Colouring ADIs lowered

The scientific panel on additives of the European Food Safety Authority has recently lowered the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) levels for food colourants Quinoline Yellow (E104), Sunset Yellow FCF (E110) and Ponceau 4R (E124). According to a statement from EFSA, the panel concluded that exposure to these colours, which have been used in foods for decades since their initial approval, could exceed the new ADIs for both adults and children. The panel has reassessed available data, including any new evidence on the safety of the food colourants, and is now systematically examining all food additives in addition to “these colours for which some concerns have been raised.”

The European Commission had asked EFSA to consider six specific colours as a priority, following the release of a study published by Southampton University in 2007 linking certain mixtures of these colours and the preservative sodium benzoate with hyperactivity in children.
