Howeve in tandem with the rising share of the supermarket/conveniene store/discount retailer, the independent off-licence sector continues to decline in terms of the number of businesses in the market.

So stated DCU Senior Lecturer Tony Foley, author of the DIGI’s recently-published The Economic Contribution of the Drinks Industry 2013.

Wine is now responsible for 26.1% of alcohol clearances and he pointed out that the amount of alcohol consumed at home has increased due to income and regulatory constraints together with a change in consumer attitudes etc.
