Finance Minister Michael Noonan indicated that 45 million bottles of wine were sold between January and the end of August.
In total, taxes on wine have brought in €175m in the first eight months of the year.
He pointed out that the total provisional alcohol products tax yield from wine in the year to August had been €174.8 million. This can be set against €231.4 million for 2012, €231.0 million for 2011 and €218.8 million for 2010, he added.
“The corresponding figures for VAT are not separately identifiable within the VAT receipts as the VAT returns do not require the yield from a particular sector or sub-sector of trade to be identified,” he continued.
The Minister was responding to a parliamentary question from Brendan Griffin.
