Paddy celebrates Centenary with limited edition release
Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard celebrates 100 years of Paddy Irish whiskey with the release of a new single pot still limited Paddy Centenary Edition.
27 September 2013
This exclusive limited edition aims to convey Paddy’s rich heritage and irreverent personality by re-telling the story of its namesake, Paddy Flaherty, the enigmatic salesman after whom Cork Distilleries Company re-named its flagship whiskey in 1913.
The seven year-old whiskey is in honour of the original recipe which was a ‘pure pot still’, as it was termed in 1913. Presented in a handcrafted, wooden gift box, the Centenary Edition celebrates the best of old and new whiskey-making techniques producing a flavour profile that has rich spicy notes, typical of aged pot still whiskey and hints of vanilla, true to the brand’s signature style.
The vintage packaging evokes the look and feel of the early 20th Century and includes an image of Paddy Flaherty on the inside of the gift box alongside his signature and the Cork Distilleries Company logo. In keeping with the historical look, the label describes the product as ‘Old Irish Whisky’ as in 1913, the term ‘whiskey’ with an ‘e’ was used by distillers in Dublin only. Whiskey producers around Ireland adopted this spelling later in the century.
Brendan Buckley, Global Innovation and Category Development Director for Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard, commented, “Paddy Irish Whiskey has reached this impressive milestone thanks to its loyal fans across the world who love its great taste and its authentic Irish character which stem from Paddy Flaherty’s enigmatic and memorable style. 100 years on, we wanted to honour the man himself and his contribution to the brand’s success. We believe this new limited edition is a fitting tribute to Paddy and the original recipe he sold and we hope Paddy fans around the world will enjoy discovering the story of Paddy Flaherty and toasting 100 years of this iconic Irish brand with this unique special edition”.
First distilled in 1779, Paddy was originally sold under the name ‘Cork Distilleries Company Old Irish Whisky’. Paddy Flaherty joined the company in 1882 and quickly started to draw crowds as he travelled from pub to pub and word spread that this larger-than-life character would always offer a round in each pub he visited.
Over time Paddy became synonymous with the whiskey and publicans began writing to the distillery asking for another case of “Paddy’s whisky”. The name stuck, so much so that in 1913, Cork Distilleries Company officially changed the name to Paddy Whisky.
Paddy Centenary Edition is available in travel retail and specialist retailers in Ireland and France, priced at €75 (RRP).
