The event is being spearheaded by the Honorary President of Irish Pubs Global Enda O’Coineen who founded the global network linking owners and managers of Irish pubs around the world. The network now has over 20 chapters and a database of more than 4,000 Irish pubs representing an estimated €3bn industry.

“The Irish pub, both here and abroad, continues to be a major attraction for tourists” explained Enda O’Coineen, “the reason for their success is community, personality, environment and increasingly, great Irish food.

“This Gathering is a means of acknowledging the role of pub-owners as ambassadors for Ireland and bringing them together to see what can be learned.”

David Copley runs traditional Irish pub The Auld Dubliner in Long Beach, California. He travelled over for the event having organised a Gathering in Ireland.

“For nine years we’ve had locals ask if ever we are going home if they can tag along, so we decided to set up a pub and music tour with the highlight being a Gathering in Doolin on 28th September. We have 20 patrons from our pub coming with us. I’m sure it’s a common story of Irish living in USA and having friends constantly say ‘I’d love to go back with you’. It just takes some organisation and a desire to set it up. In this case ‘The Gathering’ was great impetus.”

The two-day conference includes speeches from Alltech Chief Executive Pearse Lyons, Jerry Kennelly of Tweak.com, Bord Bia Chairman Michael Carey, Financier Enda O ‘Coineen of Kilcullen Kapital Partners and comedian/pub owner Pat Shortt who’ll lead an international pub panel discussion group.

The Vintners Federation of Ireland and Licensed Vintners Association are supporting the event which is being hosted by the DoubleTree Hotel, formerly the Burlington Hotel, in Dublin.

The event will be Webcast liive on www.drinksindustryireland.ie today from 9.30am.
