Micheál Martin, the Taoiseach for Ireland, has strongly condemned the recent tariffs to be imposed by Donald Trump.

In a government statement, he said: “I deeply regret the US decision to impose 20% tariffs on imports from across the European Union”.

He continued: “We see no justification for this. More than €4.2 billion worth of goods and services are traded between the EU and the US daily”.

Avoiding confrontation

The government of Ireland believes there is no benefit to disrupting the relationship of the US with the tariffs.

Martin aims to avoid confrontations with Trump and instead wants to foster the existing and “strong” transatlantic trading relationship.

The government has stated that its priority is the protection of jobs and the Irish economy.

“Weathering the storm” appears to be the mantra of the government as they deliberate on the next steps to take when attempting to negotiate the imposed tariffs.
