Tesco has announced that it has recently removed plastic trays and film from its range of whole fresh chickens.

Instead, the chicken will now come in a single, easy to use removable bag that keeps the chicken protected and fresh, while using less plastic packaging overall, the retailer noted.

The change applies to five Tesco own brand products, spanning medium, large and extra-large whole chickens, as well as Tesco Finest and Free-Range chicken.

By switching to the new bag format, Tesco will cut the amount of plastic packaging used across these products by 10%.

4Rs strategy

Tesco noted that this change forms part of its wider 4Rs strategy (remove, reduce, reuse, recycle) which aims to reduce Tesco’s overall packaging footprint.

Commenting on the announcement, John Brennan, Tesco Ireland Fresh Food category director, said: “The new chicken bag which can be recycled at home, uses less plastic while still delivering the same great quality our customers expect.

“We’ve already seen a positive response to similar changes in our beef mince packaging, and we’re confident customers will welcome this move too.”
4Rs strategy

Andy McGregor, Tesco Ireland’s head of sustainability, added: “We’re committed to removing plastic where we can, reducing it where we can’t, finding options for reuse, and helping customers manage what’s left.

“This new chicken pack is a practical example of removing unnecessary packaging and reducing waste in customers’ homes.”

Products moving to the new packaging include:

· Tesco Whole Chicken 1.3kg
· Tesco Irish Large Whole Chicken 2kg
· Tesco Fresh Whole Chicken Medium 1.5kg
· Tesco Finest Irish Corn Fed Whole Chicken 1.2kg
· Tesco Free Range Irish Whole Chicken 1.6kg
