Self-scanning for customers has been introduced in SuperValu, with the first store to adopt the technology in Ballincollig, Co Cork. As part of Supervalu’s innovation agenda, the technology allows shoppers to pick up a handheld scanner at the door to scan products and pack their groceries while moving along the aisles. The scanner gives them a running total. Operating in a similar way to Luas, there will be random checks of customers’ bags at the checkout.

The system is already installed in over 2,000 supermarkets across 60 different retail chains in Europe. In Ireland, Superquinn is the only other supermarket to use the system.

Seán Quish, managing director of Quish’s SuperValu Ballincollig, said it aims to always be "ahead of the game" in terms of offering its customers innovative products and technology. "Our online shopping service has been very successful as well as our diverse range of ‘Kitchen at Quishs’ ready meals. We have 34 self-scan units which are designed to make shopping quick and easy. This is also an important feature to build customer loyalty as consumers prefer stores which help them control their weekly grocery budget."

The self-scanning system follows on from SuperValu recently launching an app, which it says is the first fully transactional grocery app in Ireland.
