The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Barry Andrews, officially opened Smiles, Rehab Enterprises’ latest convenience store outlet located in Glasthule DART station on 26 March. The event was also attended by Angela Kerins, chief executive, Rehab and Tom Devoy, general manager, DART. The Glasthule outlet is the tenth Smiles store to be opened in Rehab Enterprises’ rapidly-growing network across Dublin which includes outlets in AIB Bankcentre, Dáil Éireann, Trinity Hall, and the head offices of Eircom, Ulster Bank and Vodafone, as well as Blackrock DART station. The store will offer a range of goods to commuters, including confectionery, minerals, ice creams, and newspapers, and will be open seven days a week from 7am to 8pm weekdays and from 9am to 6pm on weekends.

Rehab Enterprises operates a unique social employment model and has a diverse workforce of 430-strong staff of whom more than half are people with disabilities.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Andrews said: “Rehab is to be congratulated for this latest retail initiative which provides an important convenience store option for the hundreds of commuters who pass through Glasthule DART station everyday. This store and the nine other shops operating under the ‘Smiles’ brand offer a unique employment model which sees people with disabilities work alongside those without. ‘Smiles’ represents a best practice which I would encourage more employers to pursue in our collective effort to secure employment for people with disabilities and in enabling them to build long and meaningful careers as part of their communities.”
