A new initiative called ‘Shop Local Saturday’ has been launched to encourage consumers to shop locally on the first Saturday of every month.

Supported by Senator Feargal Quinn, Bobby Kerr, Catherine Fulvio, ex-Irish International rugby player Shane Byrne and a cross section of local representatives, the first Shop Local Saturday, held on 1 September in Co. Wicklow, saw over 150 local businesses participate, and received countywide public support.

The initiative launched by Mystreet.ie, aims to safeguard local jobs and is free for businesses to participate in. Each business receives a number of free benefits for doing so, including a MyStreet.ie website presence, access to the MyStreet.ie voucher system, access to the Shop Local Saturday marketing toolkit (in-store and e-marketing material) and access to the Shop Local Saturday resource centre.

Participating businesses in Wicklow on 1 September, used Shop Local Saturday as an opportunity to give back to customers who supported them throughout the year by offering special discounts and holding events to drive new business in-store.

The next Shop Local Saturday will take place on Saturday, 6 October 2012 and the focus will then shift to a national roll-out on a county by county basis. To join the movement, visit www.shoplocalsaturday.ie
