Irish consumer confidence showed a modest improvement in May, according to the latest Credit Union Consumer Sentiment Survey, though shoppers remain highly value-conscious amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

The survey found sentiment recovered slightly following recent declines, helped by easing energy costs and Government support measures.

However, confidence remains weak overall, with consumers continuing to prioritise value and closely monitor household spending.

Decline in March and April

The improvement in sentiment reversed some of the decline recorded during March and April, with consumers slightly less negative about household finances, spending plans and the wider economy.

Confidence around employment prospects also improved modestly during the month.

Despite this, the overall mood among consumers remains cautious, with rising living costs continuing to influence spending behaviour across grocery, convenience and discretionary categories.

The report noted that consumers are increasingly focused on affordability, promotions and managing day-to-day costs.

‘Financial resilience’

A special survey question also highlighted the varying financial resilience of Irish households.

Just over half of consumers said they could manage an unexpected €1,000 expense using savings or income, while around one in four said they would need to borrow, sell possessions or could not cope financially.

The findings point to continued pressure on discretionary spending and reinforce the importance for retailers of maintaining strong value messaging, competitive pricing and clear promotional activity.

The research also showed consumers remain cautious around household finances despite some improvement in outlook during May.
