Major grocery retailers have pledged to reward colleagues with Christmas bonuses, following a challenging year for staff.

Tesco Ireland announced that it will be giving a 10% bonus on the hourly rate to colleagues working across its stores and distribution, in a move which the supermarket giant said was an “acknowledgement of their incredible effort to date”, as the Christmas period approaches.

Colleagues will receive the 10% bonus between 29 November and 26 December 2020, if they were in their role on or before 1 September 2020. The company has also increased the existing “colleague shopping discount” from 10% to 20% from 15 December to 21 December.

Kari Daniels, CEO, Tesco Ireland, said the company wanted to mark the commitment of colleagues during the Christmas season. “Our colleagues continue to rise to the challenge of Covid 19 and we recognise that this will be a very different Christmas,” Daniels said. “In recognition of our teams on the frontline in our stores and distribution centre we will be awarding a 10% bonus for the duration of the Christmas season.  I thank them sincerely for their continued hard work, dedication and resilience.”

Earlier this afternoon, Aldi Ireland also announced a Christmas bonus for colleagues, “as a thank you to those who have worked tirelessly throughout this challenging year”. Store and distribution colleagues will receive a 10% bonus in November, which will be paid in December ahead of the Christmas period.

Aldi said the announcement recognises the efforts of 4,000 colleagues who have worked to keep the nation fed during an unprecedented year.

“This year has been a difficult one for so many and our colleagues have worked tirelessly to ensure the nation continues to have access to high quality affordable food,” said Niall O’Connor, Aldi Ireland group managing director.

“This bonus is a gesture of our appreciation for our amazing Aldi colleagues who have shown incredible resilience and dedication throughout 2020,” O’Connor added.
