Retailers’ association RGDATA has expressed its concern over reports from a number of its members that some local councils have been posting out “vastly increased rates bills” to local businesses over the last week.

“Despite the government promising to keep a tight lid on business costs, RGDATA has received alarming reports that some local authorities are putting an additional squeeze on trading businesses to replace the rates revenue that has been lost through businesses that have had to close over the last year,” the association stated in a ‘news flash’ to its members online.

“This is utterly cynical and unacceptable,” RGDATA said.

The association has asked its members to check their rates bill to see if it has been increased this year. If so, RGDATA has asked members to let the group know immediately by emailing rgdata@rgdata.ie, so that it can take the matter up urgently on retailers’ behalf.
