Independent retailers organisation RGDATA has reported it is attending meetings convened by The Local Jobs Alliance, ISME and IBEC to discuss the “unsustainable impact that government initiatives are having on employment costs”.

RGDATA is seeking a reduction in employer’s PRSI; a pause in all government schemes and cost increases until a proper economic impact assessment is published and a specific support scheme for SME employers to fund the additional costs arising from a number of employment cost increases.

These include the increase in the minimum wage; the extension of the sick pay scheme, pension auto enrolment and the additional public holiday and new paid leave schemes.

The association is also supporting the return to 9% VAT for foodservice.

RGDATA has also written to Retail Minister Neale Richmond in relation to business costs and the promised economic assessment that has still not been published.

“We understand that the Department’s review of the impact of recent increases in business costs on SME businesses has been completed and we are disappointed that it has yet to be published despite being promised that this would happen before the end of 2023,” wrote RGDATA director general Tara Buckley.
