A masked man armed with what appeared to be a firearm entered SuperValu on Military Road, Dublin 8, at approximately 6:55 pm, according to Extra.ie

He demanded money before being confronted by two off-duty gardaí.

The officers, a male and a female detective from the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, were in the shop on their lunch break.

Though licensed to carry firearms, their weapons were locked away at the time.

Quick action

Extra.ie reported that when the male detective identified himself as a garda, the gunman threatened him with the weapon.

A physical struggle followed, during which the female officer and a member of the public assisted in disarming and restraining the suspect.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the officers were said to be “shaken” by the incident.

Arrest and investigation

Local gardaí arrived on the scene, and the suspect, a man in his 40s, was arrested and taken to a Garda Station in Dublin.

Extra.ie reported that he is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, which allows for up to 24 hours of detention.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that the firearm is believed to be a replica, though it has been seized for further ballistic examination.

The investigation is ongoing, and both gardaí involved are receiving welfare support.
