Lidl Ireland has recently announced it will open the doors to its brand-new store in Bundoran, Co Donegal, at 8 am on Thursday, 12 February, bringing the retailer’s ‘More to Value’ proposition to the Bundoran community.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new state-of-the-art store will be attended by ladies Gaelic football stars, including Donegal captain Roisin Rodgers and Donegal Senior Aodh Ruadh BAS player Cait Gillespie.

Lidl Bundoran will have a great range of opening day offers available for customers and the first ten shoppers through the doors will receive complementary Lidl gift vouchers to redeem in-store.

Local charity

As part of its commitment to the local community, the Lidl Bundoran store team has selected Ozanam Hour Residential Unit in Bundoran as the local charity to receive a donation of €1,000 in Lidl vouchers on opening day.

The new store located on Station Road marks a major milestone in the retailer’s investment in Co Donegal, with planning permission granted in 2023 to relocate from its existing position, which is also on Station Road and has served the community since 2006.

The expanded new Bundoran store will create six new permanent jobs, adding to its 24-strong team, and reflects Lidl’s established ‘concept’ design which features a spacious 1650 sqm sales floor area, offering a premier shopping experience for customers self-service checkouts, long tills, DRS machines and the popular in-store bakery offering fresh baked goods daily.

Sustainability is a key focus for the Bundoran store as the retail unit incorporates an ISO 50001-certified energy management system.

This includes high performing energy efficient technologies, the installation of solar panels (PV panels), LED lighting with Dali control, and heat recovery systems.

Within the 120-space car park, the provision of a number of bike spaces and electric vehicle (EV) charging points further supports sustainable transport options for customers and store teams.

Ahead of the store opening Thomas McAuliffe, regional managing director for Lidl Ireland said: “For a long time, Lidl has been dedicated to offering unbeatable value to the Bundoran community, and we are thrilled to finally open the doors to our state-of-the-art new store on Thursday, 12 February.

“This upgraded store represents a substantial investment, providing a major boost to the local Donegal economy and securing long-term employment in the area.

“The new premises will offer a more modern store and an expanded sales floor, ensuring an improved shopping experience for our customers.

“Designed with both exceptional customer experience and sustainability in mind, this innovative new building features an energy-efficient design, unique in-store offerings, and excellent facilities.

“We are grateful for the community’s warm welcome and look forward to inviting shoppers in to experience the high-quality products and market-leading prices Lidl is known for.”

Donegal Ladies Gaelic Football captain Roisin Rodgers added: “As a Donegal local, it’s great to see Lidl continue to invest in the community and open a brand new modern store here in Bundoran.

“It will enhance the shopping experience for both locals and those who visit the busy seaside town.

Lidl has been a long-standing supporter of LGFA across Ireland for a decade now and it’s great to see that Lidl’s commitment extends far beyond just grocery aisles – it’s about fostering local growth and giving back to communities and I’m thrilled that Bundoran is a part of that.

“I’m really looking forward to opening day and getting the chance to meet everyone – make sure you get down early.”

Lidl opened its first store in Donegal in Letterkenny in 2000 and currently employs more than 180 people locally across its existing stores in Bundoran, Ballybofey, Buncrana, Donegal Town, Dungloe, Milford, Carndonagh, and two stores in Letterkenny.

Lidl’s investment in Donegal contributes significantly to the local economy.

In 2025 Lidl Ireland confirmed that a total of €40 million worth of goods and services was procured from 25 suppliers and business partners across Donegal in 2024.

Key Donegal suppliers include Mulrines – a premium juice and smoothie business the Irish Fish Canners, who secured a permanent listing through Lidl’s Kickstart Supplier Development Programme.

Lidl Ireland was named a ‘Top Employer’ by the Top Employers Institute in 2026 for the sixth year running.

The retailer was also named Most Reputable Retailer and #1 Value for Money Organisation in the 2025 RepTrak Ireland study, and was named Most Sustainable Retailer in Ireland, ranking #6 in the RepTrak® Sustainability Index for 2025.

Lidl Ireland currently employs more than 6,000 employees in its 190 stores, Head Office in Tallaght and three distribution centres and regional offices.
