Once again, Kantar Worldpanel’s latest report on the Irish supermarket share shows robust growth in the sector, with a 3.8% increase year-on-year.

One of the most notable figures in the latest report, outlining the 12 weeks to April 24th, is that Aldi’s market share has climbed above 10% for the first time. It’s a considerable milestone for the German company, which now holds a 10.9% share.

Aldi’s group buying director Finbar McCarthy calls the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel an “unprecedented restatement of grocery shopping behaviour in Ireland.

“We continue to attract vast numbers of new customers on a weekly basis,” McCarthy said, “drawn by a combination of quality products and our prices.”

McCarthy points out that over the past 12 months, more than 1.35m households shopped at Aldi in the past year, while more than 50% of customer spend was on Irish products. “There are many exciting developments underway at Aldi,” he added, “and we look forward to welcoming even more new shoppers to share the experience with us.”

Meanwhile, SuperValu has retained its spot as Ireland’s most popular supermarket, capturing 23% of consumer grocery spend, a year-on-year sales increase of 2.8%.

Upon the release of its latest supermarket share data Kantar Worldpanal also revealed it has changed the way it calcultates the figures. From now on, the survey will be carried out among 5,000 households, as opposed to the previous 3,000. This should offer even more accurate and detailed totals as the battle for top spot goes on.
