Independent Newspapers has told wholesaler Newspread it is raising the price of its products, The Independent and The Sunday World. The wholesale prices have been increased by 3.5% and 5.25% respectively, without any increase on the retail price of either paper.

CSNA chief executive Vincent Jennings commented that this was a “very unwelcome move” on the part of the newspaper company which has built up good will among Irish retailers who distribute its products and facilitate special arrangements with certain customer groups at no extra cost.

“They have built up levels of good over time and this has been put in jeopardy,” said Jennings, “They had an alternative; if they need extra money, go back to the consumer,” he said, adding that the move will not go unnoticed by retailers.
