Cadbury, in an exclusive partnership with Spar, has unveiled a new campaign dedicated to supporting Irish women’s grassroots football, ‘Become a Supporter and a Half’.

As part of the launch, Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team captain, Katie McCabe was also announced as a Cadbury brand ambassador.

To participate, shoppers can buy a Cadbury Dairy Milk exclusively in participating Spar stores nationwide until 5 May 2022 and Cadbury will donate up to €50,000 to grassroots women’s football supporting clubs to make upgrades to facilities where they’re needed most.

Throughout the year, ‘Become a Supporter and a Half’ aims to address barriers to participation and facilitate donations to grassroots senior women’s football clubs right across the country.

The development of this initiative follows a Cadbury survey aimed at discovering what would encourage more women to get involved in football, with 65% of respondents outlining better facilities as a key area that needs to be improved.

Five grassroots women’s football clubs will be in with a chance of winning funding worth €10,000 for their club with ‘Become a Supporter and a Half’ by going to womensfootball.cadbury.ie. Each club entering will be asked how they would use the donation to improve their facilities and winners will be selected by a judging panel from members of the FAI and Cadbury. See full terms and conditions for how to participate and restrictions on the prize.

The launch with Katie McCabe sees Cadbury continue to take an active role in supporting the FAI’s strategy to raise awareness and grow the women’s game in Ireland through acts of generosity. Through the partnership, Cadbury aims to support women’s football at a grassroots level by enhancing club facilities while raising the profile of women’s players in Ireland.

“We’re delighted to be working with Katie McCabe as an ambassador for Cadbury’s official partnership with the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team,” said managing director of Mondelez Ireland, Eoin Kellett.

“Like us, Katie wants to help break down some of the barriers that women’s grassroots football teams face today,” he continued. “Improving facilities can make a big difference and having rose through the ranks of Irish women’s football, Katie is the perfect role model and an inspiration to many women who want to get involved.”

“Spar has a long and proud history of supporting women’s sport, female athletes and grassroots football,” added Colin Donnelly, sales director at Spar Ireland.

“We are delighted to be in a position to support Katie and the Republic of Ireland Women’s Team in this initiative to allow grassroots women’s football clubs to make upgrades to their facilities. Spar continues to be a proud supporter of Irish football in every regard.”

To ‘Become a Supporter and a Half’ and help grassroots women’s football, you can go to Spar stores nationwide until 5 May 2022 and purchase a bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk. For a chance to win funding for your club go to womensfootball.cadbury.ie by 5 May 2022 and fill out the short entry form. Terms and conditions apply.
