BWG Group announces that it has agreed terms to acquire Heaney Meats Catering Co Limited, a large supplier of premium quality meat products to the foodservice sector in Ireland. The transaction, which is subject to approval from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, will further strengthen BWG’s position within the fast-growing foodservice sector and follows the group’s recent acquisition of Corrib Food Products.

Heaney Meats specialises in the preparation and distribution of premium quality beef, lamb, poultry, pork and bacon to the foodservice sector. The company, which was founded by Shayne and Kenneth Heaney in 1996, has annual sales of approximately €24 million and employs 75 people at its facility in Galway.  The business has been the recipient of multiple industry awards and has developed well-invested supply chain operations that include a fleet of 25 refrigerated vehicles. Generations of the Heaney family have been master butchers stretching back over 300 years.

Following eight years of consecutive growth, BWG Foodservice has seen its annual sales increase to over €150 million, before the proposed acquisition of Heaney Meats, and it is now a leader in the foodservice sector in Ireland. The strong growth has been driven by ongoing investment across BWG Foodservice’s nationwide supply chain, the continuous expansion of its product range and targeted acquisitions of well-established complementary businesses like Heaney Meats.

The acquisition of Heaney Meats is consistent with BWG’s future ambition and strategy for growth and follows the group’s latest acquisitions of Corrib Food Products and 4 Aces Wholesale.

Following its acquisition, Heaney Meats will continue to be led by Shayne and Kenneth Heaney.

Leo Crawford, group CEO, BWG Group, said Heaney Meats will be “a great addition to BWG” and “further broaden our expanding offering to the foodservice sector”.

“Heaney Meats is a long established and very progressive business that we have successfully partnered with over many years,” he said. “We look forward to welcoming Shayne and Kenneth Heaney and all their colleagues to BWG and to working with them to further grow our combined business.”

Shayne and Kenneth Heaney of Heaney Meats said they were delighted to join BWG.

“We are excited by the future opportunities which will allow us to further build on our family’s long tradition in the meat business,” the Heaneys said. “Being part of BWG will be a very positive development for our staff, suppliers, customers, and our overall business.”

BWG currently has a turnover of over €1.5 billion.
