Convenience store operator BWG Foods has teamed up with its exclusive premium coffee partners Insomnia,  Bewley’s and Seattle’s Best Coffee to introduce sustainable coffee cups, in a move which will prevent 19 million coffee cups going to landfill each year.

This initiative will see the immediate rollout of 100% compostable and fully biodegradable cups across BWG Foods’ retail brands: Spar, EuroSpar, Mace, Londis and XL – spanning more than 1,040 stores in Ireland.

Leo Crawford, group chief executive, BWG Group said: “Through our various retail brands, BWG Foods is the nation’s biggest seller of premium coffee to-go and with consumption levels continuing to rise, we recognise the importance of providing sustainable packaging solutions which meet the wants of consumers and are good for the environment. We are pleased to have the support of our three exclusive coffee partners and to be able to source the solutions via Irish packaging companies.”

Created from raw materials and plant sources, the sustainable coffee cups are certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Board, providing assurance to consumers that the cups have been sustainably sourced.

In addition to the new cups, BWG Foods also encourages other environmentally friendly initiatives such as reusable KeepCups and branded Bags for Life, and the company plans to introduce other sustainable packaging options in the near future, such as compostable food containers, cutlery and drinking straws.
