Three generations of Mallow’s wholesale distribution dynasty, Barry Group, celebrated the company’s 60 years in business this weekend, with an anniversary party for current and retired staff.

Jim Barry, currently the company managing director, his wife Niamh, and his daughters Holly and Amy, who are involved in the family business, hosted the celebration in Mallow, Cork in honour of Jim’s father, company founder James A Barry.

Founded in Banteer by James A Barry in 1955, Barry Group, which is now based in Mallow, is one of Ireland’s leading wholesale distribution companies.

The group trades nationally and internationally with over 1,000 retail customers, operating successful grocery franchise brands. These include 265 independently-owned store franchises in the Republic of Ireland, which operate under the Barry Group’s Costcutter, Carry Out, and Quik Pick brands.

Following significant investment in the past five years, the Barry Group operates from a state-of-the-art 150,000 sq ft distribution centre in Mallow, where over 240 people are employed.

The company, which has a turnover of more than a quarter of a billion euro, also has a growing number of export customers in the UK, the US, France, Switzerland and Cyprus.

Speaking at the event to mark 60 years in business, Jim Barry acknowledged the huge contribution his father James A Barry has made, describing him as an “inspirational man” with “great foresight”. He also praised the “fantastic loyalty of the people who work with us here in Mallow”.

Included in the celebration night were special presentations to seven team members, acknowledged for over 20 years’ service with the Barry Group, as well as to two employees with over 35 years’ service.

A diamond ring was the star prize for one lucky staff member, in a draw to mark the diamond anniversary, and a national fundraising initiative for six Irish charities, which will run in stores countrywide throughout the anniversary year, was kicked-off with a generous €60,000 pledge by the company.
