Government plans to consolidate alcohol legislation into single act

CSNA asks for retailers' views on the Sale of Alcohol Act

The Convenience Stores & Newsagents Association (CSNA) is asking for retailers’ views, following an announcement from the Department of Justice that it intends to consolidate and codify all of the separate pieces of legislation regarding the sale, supply and consumption of alcohol into a single act, the Sale of Alcohol Act.

The CSNA states this will be primarily focused on making the legislation more appropriate for the 21st Century, given that much of the law controlling this area is rooted in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

As the lead Department, Justice will balance both the public order and commercial needs in addition to being mindful of the public health aspects of the sale of alcohol.

The CSNA will be taking part in the process and would welcome retailers’ views, particularly in the area of trading hours, the requirement for extinguishment and online delivery/sales.
