RGDATA launches shop local and buy Irish social media campaign

RGDATA, the representative association for 3,500 local shops, convenience stores and supermarkets throughout Ireland, has launched a social media campaign highlighting the contribution that local shops and supermarkets are making during the Covid-19 crisis.

“RGDATA wants to encourage people to shop in their local family-owned shop and to support Irish producers and suppliers as this is the best way to support our local communities during this crisis,” says RGDATA director general Tara Buckley.

Local shops and supermarkets are playing a key role in ensuring that communities all over the country are getting essential food and supplies. “Independent shops have stepped up to the mark and reacted very quickly to protect their staff and customers and ensure a safe place to come and shop,” adds Buckley. “We are hearing stories daily about our members and how they are ensuring that elderly and vulnerable people in their communities are getting their essential food and other supplies.

“This crisis clearly demonstrates the vital importance of local, family owned businesses and how they play a vital role at the heart of their community,” she continues. “RGDATA members are also extremely grateful to their staff and managers who are doing a tremendous job during these difficult times.

“RGDATA wanted to remind customers that buying Irish in your local shop has a significant positive impact on your local community – according to research done for RGDATA by economist Jim Power €1 spent in your local shop is worth €4 to your local economy. It’s called the multiplier effect and we all need to remember this as we work together to get through this pandemic.”

Buckley praised the owners and staff in local shops and supermarkets all over the country who were proving every day that a local independent family owned grocery/convenience store is the vital beating heart of a connected community.

“RGDATA also wants to say thank you to the gardai; local sporting and other voluntary groups and community leaders all around the country for pulling together with their local independent shop to look out for vulnerable people in the community,” she adds. “When we all work together we can get through this challenging time.”
