Ryan’s Centra in Raheen, Co Limerick has been short-listed in the first International Convenience Retailer of the Year Awards. The awards scheme was launched this year by Insight Research and NACS, and sponsored by Imperial Tobacco and Airplay.

Ryan’s store, which was also awarded Centra Store of the Year this summer, has been singled out for the accolade because it has “rejuvenated sales with a new zoned store design that drives fresh foods and value,” according to the event organisers.

Nominated alongside Ryan’s Centra (Musgrave Retail Partners, Ireland) for International Convenience Retailer of the Year are: Pick n Pay Express, Pick n Pay, South Africa, Sainsbury’s Local, Sainsbury’s, UK and Spar China, Spar International/Spar China.

The recently revamped Centra store has modernised its offering and restructured the layout to maximise shopping trips in today’s increasingly competitive environment. A key component of the transformation is the new ‘zoned layout’ which impressed the international judging panel. The store’s first aisle was widened to highlight the fresh chilled zone, while lower level fixtures for bakery and fruit and vegetables, plus the deli/salad bar, were added.

In addition to the new layout, the judges also commended the redevelopment of the store’s range, particularly the “increased presence and profile of the Centra own brand throughout the store including a Good to Go premium range.” The store is said to be attracting an extra 2,000 customers and fresh sales are up 40%, “lifted by new concepts in impulse, the fresh food counters, hot food and breakfast bars.”
