The seizure was made following routine risk profiling, with the assistance of Revenue’s mobile X-ray scanner and detector dog Milo.
The contraband was discovered in a consignment declared as truck parts, following a search of a container that had arrived on a vessel from Zeebrugge.
The smuggled cigarettes, branded ‘Lambert & Butler’, have an estimated value of over €6.8 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €5.3 million.
Investigations are ongoing.
This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.
