As part of its own-brand discount range due to launch this autumn, Tesco has announced it will also be releasing a range of value brand wine likely to be priced under £3. The development emerges just five months after the retailer said it wanted to work with the government on new laws to ensure the responsible pricing of alcohol.

A Tesco UK spokesperson said the range simply aims to cater for those feeling less cash rich as a result of the current economic climate.

Tesco already offers value ranges on its beers and spirits and believes wine would be a logical extension to this. Tesco Ireland has said that it has no plans, at the moment, to introduce a similar range of wines.
