1. Aldi records over 20% sales growth

Aldi has emerged as a clear winner in terms of sales growth in the ongoing battle for market share, with sales up by 20.4%, according to the latest grocery market data published today by Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland. Kantar Worldpanel’s latest figures published by ShelfLife, also show that Irish supermarkets are continuing to capture more of the domestic grocery market at the expense of Northern Ireland’s retailers.  

2. Alcohol, tobacco costs 63% above EU average

Ireland ranks as the fifth most expensive country for consumers, according to a European-wide survey. The Irish Examiner reports that Eurostat’s new price comparison shows how alcohol and tobacco is 63% more expensive in Ireland compared to average European prices. What’s more, food and non-alcoholic drinks in the country’s supermarkets and shops are 18% more expensive, according to Eurostat’s figures. 

3. Discount retailer creates 30 new jobs

Thirty new jobs have been created in Shannon by discount retailer Dealz opening its 13th store in Ireland. The Clare Champion reports that located in the SkyCourt Shopping Centre, with a retail space of 6,900 sq ft, Dealz Shannon is the newest edition to the Dealz portfolio, which has so far created over 390 Irish jobs. The new store is taking up the unit vacated by another discount store, BuyLo, which closed last January with the loss of 12 jobs. 

4. Petrol prices expected to fall 8c-10c over next three weeks

AA Ireland says the price of Brent crude oil, which dictates European fuel prices, has fallen from an average of $106 during the month of March to $90 today. RTE News reports that according to AA Ireland, there is a three-to four-week lag between a change in prices and a change at the pumps. AA Ireland claims a number of its studies showed fuel retailers on average faithfully followed the drop in oil prices. 

5. Walgreens steps into new regions with Boots

The Irish Times reports on the ramifications of the takeover of Boots, one of the best-known names on the British high street, by the US company, Walgreens and its sister chain Duane Reade, which enjoy similar status stateside. The paper reports the combination of the largest pharmacy business in Europe with America’s biggest drugstore chain, will create a global pharmacy powerhouse, trading from more than 11,000 stores throughout 12 countries.
