Kellogg’s has announced a voluntary recall in the US of three sizes of Kellogg’s Special K Red Berries cereal packets due to the possible presence of glass fragments.

On the company’s US website, Kellogg’s described the recall as "a precautionary action" and said there have been no reports of any injuries associated with the product.

The packs of Kellogg’s Special K Red Berries affected were the 11.2-ounce packages, 22.4-ounce twin packs and 37-ounce packages, with specific UPC codes and ‘better if used before’ dates which are set out in the company’s recall notice

Speaking to Reuters, spokesman Kris Charles said the recall stemmed only from a single batch of one of the ingredients. "This is a very small recall…We took the step out of an abundance of caution," said Charles.

The US website also reassured customers that "our number one priority is the quality and safety of our foods. All of our processes will be thoroughly reviewed and appropriate actions will be taken to help prevent this situation from happening in the future."

Customers were advised to check cereal packets they had at home and if they matched the affected products, were told, "please do not eat the product" but contact the company instead for a replacement coupon. Kellogg’s added there was a possibility that it "may also make arrangements to retrieve the product for further evaluation".

No other Kellogg products, including products sold in Canada, were affected by the recall.
