Irish-owned brand SOOP Mug recently surveyed Irish consumers nationwide to uncover what, where, and how they enjoy soup this Christmas.

With Christmas fast approaching, a new survey from Irish-owned brand SOOP Mug has uncovered the country’s most surprising — and often hilarious — festive soup habits. From turning an entire Christmas dinner into a soup to eating it out of anything vaguely cup-shaped, the results paint a vivid picture of how Ireland really warms up over the holidays.

The Festive Fun – Ireland’s Soup Confessions survey asked Irish consumers about their most nostalgic, chaotic and creative soup moments. What came back was a blend of sentimentality, ingenuity and pure festive madness.

SOOP Mugs are available nationwide in Ireland with distribution in the UK to follow. SOOP is a brand new concept – fresh, ready to heat-and-eat soup on-the-go! With its unique packaging incorporating a built-in “spoon” in the lid, people can enjoy soup in places previously not possible.

Ireland’s top soup confessions

Ireland’s number one dream soup? The full Christmas dinner in one bowl

Forget turkey sandwiches — the standout favourite was the desire to blend the whole Christmas Day plate. Respondents overwhelmingly chose ‘Full Christmas dinner’ when asked which festive food deserves to be turned into a soup.

One in ten Irish people have eaten soup out of a pint glass

When hunger struck and a clean bowl was nowhere to be found, Irish ingenuity stepped in. The most chaotic answer for ‘what’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten soup out of?’ was ‘a pint glass’ — a response that perfectly captures the national personality.

Other creative vessels included a measuring jug, a takeaway coffee cup, and one respondent who admitted to using ‘whatever wasn’t in the dishwasher’.

Phones top the list of things accidentally dropped into soup

At the intersection of festive exhaustion and “boiling broth” lies Ireland’s most relatable confession: dropping a phone into soup. It was by far the most common item mentioned, firmly beating the classic culprits like cutlery, though other mishaps included someone losing a Christmas bauble in their soup.

And the nation’s best Christmas soup? Mam’s — always

When asked who makes the best festive soup, the answer was resoundingly sentimental: Mam. No chef, café or recipe book came close. The result speaks to Ireland’s enduring relationship with home cooking, comfort food and the nostalgia baked into family kitchens at Christmas.

Beyond the headline chaos, the survey found that creamy vegetable soup remains Ireland’s go-to cosy festive flavour, many people enjoy soup daily across the Christmas period, and leftovers — ‘all of them’, according to the top answer — often find their way into a pot.

Taken together, the findings reveal a nation that sees soup not as an afterthought, but as a treasured part of the season: practical, emotional and just a little bit chaotic.

‘We always suspected Ireland had a soft spot for soup, but the results have shown just how inventive and sentimental people are about it. From pint-glass improvisation to phones taking an unexpected dip, the survey paints a brilliant picture of how soup fits into Irish Christmas life. And of course, nothing beats Mam’s version — that one was never in doubt.’ Madeleine Cosgrove, SOOP Mug spokesperson.

This year’s results highlight a clear trend in Irish festive behaviour; soup is becoming a bigger part of the Irish Christmas than ever. Daily consumption, creative leftover habits and nostalgic flavours all point to soup holding a firm place alongside the traditional turkey, ham and tins of Roses.
