Independent Sensory Services offers a range of services to product manufacturers, such as helping to determine the sensory properties of a product using trained professional tasters, or evaluating how a product is perceived by consumers using affective tests.

In addition, it also provides sensory training to help set up an in-house sensory programme, with an innovative and flexible approach that allows clients to choose a time frame and location that best
suits them.

The consultancy’s trained assessors, many of whom have been professional tasters for over 10 years, provide a specialised service. For instance, they help determine if any changes made to a product are detectable; with the currant emphasis on healthy food and in particular the pressure to reduce trans fats and salt, it is important to be able to describe a product and to maintain its sensory profile after reformulation.

While the trained panel at Independent Sensory Services is adept at quantifying the sensory characteristics of products, they also provide a useful service to any NPD team. Independent Sensory Services assessors actually appeared on the recent RTÉ production ‘Recipe for Success,’ where they had the role of eliminating the weakest product from each set of entries, and suggesting improvements to the remainder of the products, the winner from which will be sold in 190 Supervalu stores.

In addition to these services, the company offers affective tests to establish consumers’ perception i.e. to quantify the degree to which they like a product, and then compare the results with those of a rival product, giving a real competitive advantage.
