Retail Minister Neale Richmond has said he is focused on ensuring that all the government insurance reforms bring the cost of shop insurance down, independent retailers’ organisation RGDATA reports.

Speaking at a meeting with RGDATA president Colin Fee and director general Tara Buckley, Minister Richmond said one of his key priorities in office will be reducing the cost of all insurance including employers’ liability and pubic liability.

During the meeting, RGDATA impressed on the Minister the many challenges facing independent food/grocery retailers, including the level of harassment and crime that retailers frequently experience.

The Alliance for Insurance Reform (AIR) previously said at the end of last year, that insurers are “pocketing the benefits” of the government’s insurance reform plan and are taking it and policyholders “for a ride”, according to a report in The Irish Independent.

Alliance director Peter Boland welcomed more progress in the government’s plan for reform as outlined in its latest insurance report, but said key reforms still needed to be implemented, including legislation to rebalance occupiers’ duty of care and for reform of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB).
