It may be a little later than previous years, but Wines from Spain is asking wine lovers to raise a glass for the fifth annual Spanish Wine Week in Ireland, running in various locations and online throughout the country from 12-18 October.

Celebrating a good year for Spanish wines as their share of the Irish wine market grew to 14% from 2018’s 13.0%, ranking them second in wine sales, this year Spanish Wine Week will shine a light on wine shops, restaurants and online retailers who are flying the flag for Spanish wines with discounts, offers and promotions available across the country.

Woodberry Wines, The WineHouse, The NudeWine Co., Whelenhans, JN Wines and O’Brien’s are just some of the shops who will all offer extra incentives and offers during the week, giving guests the opportunity to feel the passion and learn more about Spanish wines. Cava in Galway, The Market Bar, Salamanca in Dublin and Ely in Dublin and Maynooth are also just some of the restaurants who will be tempting wine lovers with an excellent variety of Spanish wines by the glass throughout the week.

This year, a number of online wine tastings have also been added to the schedule to ensure anyone, anywhere can tune in from the comfort of their own home – don’t miss the first virtual wine tasting with Sevgi Tüzel-Conghaile from A Wine Idea and Wines Direct on Thursday 15th followed by David Whelehan and John Wilson presenting their favourite Spanish wines online. Then on Friday 16th John Wilson will join the team at WineOnline.ie for another informative evening of digital wine tasting for all. Also online this Spanish Wine Week on 18th October is a free screening of the movie Sherry & The Mystery of Palo Cortado. The movie follows a journey through the last few hundred years of wine production in Jerez and covers various aspects of the golden-hued liquor, from production to cultural standing.

The week will also include a range of events throughout Dublin from wine tastings to dinners. Mister S will host a Spanish wine dinner with FOOD & WINE Sommelier of the Year 2019 Cathryn Steunenberg on Tuesday 13th October who will present five superb Spanish wines. Open on Camden Street since late 2019, Mister S is all about showcasing the country’s finest producers with the help of their bespoke wood fired grill and the evening will see five Spanish wines paired with a Spanish inspired menu from head chef Dan Hannigan.

A number of Spanish restaurants will also be participating. On Wednesday 14th October, Matthew Nugent will host a Spanish wine dinner at the Tolka House, while also in Glasnevin, H2G will host a tapas style dinner with wine pairings on Thursday 15th October, Spanish wine lovers can enjoy paella and a glass of wine for the special price of €15 throughout the week in On The Grapevine or Pintxos and wine in Paella Bar & Co. for €20.

Events will also be held across the country throughout the week. Leslie Williams hosts a Spanish wine dinner in The Mustard Seed, Ballingarry, Co. Limerick on Thursday 15th September, there will be an evening of Spanish wine in Lizzy’s Little Kitchen in Kerry and Vinostito and Nude Wine Co. will also hold a tasting in Naas on Friday 16th October.

A fascinating programme to educate, inspire and showcase the impressive variety and diversity of Spanish winemaking regions, grapes, flavours and styles, Spanish Wine Week runs from October 12th to October 18th and is open to all restaurants and wine retailers who wish to join in the spirit of Spanish Wine Week 2020.
