The Oireachtas Finance Committee has provisionally scheduled Premier Lotteries Ireland (PLI) to appear before it next week, in order to answer questions about its recent systems crash and new ticket terminals.

Representatives of PLI, including chief executive Dermot Griffin are expected to attend, as is the National Lottery regulator, Liam Sloyan, as well as retailer groups.

It is believed that PLI’s decision to subcontract its telecommunications provision out to a third party in the UK called WestBase, will be focused on.

On Friday, ticket machines went down for two hours before the EuroMillions draw. PLI attributed this to a “firewall server malfunction”, which would have been overseen by WestBase.

This followed last month’s difficulties where the company was forced to postpone a weekly prize draw for the first time in 28 years. This was caused by its retail network crashing for several hours following an outage at its telecoms provider Telefónica, which is hired through WestBase.

Lotto officials are also likely to be asked about the functioning of new ticket terminals, supplied by Greek gaming giant Intralot. Fianna Fáil’s Sean Fleming has said he wants to know if assurances from PLI about the recent outages and ticket terminals could be “independently verified” by the regulator.
